Hip Fractures

Fractures with the most severe consequences are fractures of the proximal femur (hip fractures). In most of these cases surgery of the hip joint with implantation of joint replacements and hospital stays with long term recovery are necessary. About 25 percent of patients with hip fractures do not regain the mobility they had before the accident.

The numbers are alarming. In Germany in 2004 more than 120.000 people had hip fractures, in Switzerland about 10.000 and in Austria more than 14.000.

Preventing hip fractures consists of everyday prevention (minimizing risk factors), for patients with osteoporosis or on an osteoporosis drug therapy or by preventing the areas of risk site by hip-protectors.
